A peshtemal towel is a thin, flat-woven cotton wrap from the Turkish hammam. These two are woven from light, soft yarn and pre-washed for a crinkled texture, so they feel relaxed from the first use. They dry fast, pack flat in a beach bag and double as a wrap, scarf or picnic throw. Both have fringe on the short edges.

How to Choose
- Look: the fine stripe is quiet and airy; the block stripe has bolder washed color bands.
- Beach or bath: both are the traditional 35 × 71 in peshtemal size and work for either.
- Travel: a peshtemal weighs far less than a terry beach towel and dries quickly.
- More patterns: classic, pinstripe and grouped stripes are in peshtemal towels.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a peshtemal towel?
A peshtemal (pronounced pesh-te-mahl) is a traditional Turkish hammam towel: flat-woven, lightweight and absorbent. Today it is used as a bath towel, beach towel, wrap or travel throw.
Is a peshtemal good as a beach towel?
Yes. It is thin, so sand shakes off easily and it dries much faster than terry. At 35 × 71 in (90 × 180 cm) it covers a lounger, and it folds small enough for a carry-on or beach bag.
Peshtemal vs. terry towel: which is better for the bath?
Terry is thicker and plush; a peshtemal is lighter and dries in a fraction of the time. If you prefer a thin towel that is dry again by the next shower, choose a peshtemal.
How do I wash a peshtemal?
Machine wash cold with similar colors, then tumble dry low or hang to dry. Skip fabric softener, which reduces absorbency, and do not use bleach. The cotton softens and absorbs better with each wash.
Where are they made and are they certified?
Both are handwoven in Denizli, Turkey, from 100% Turkish cotton. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that the product meets the standard's limit values for harmful substances.
